The Government’s response to the ARC review was released in late August. It was pleasing to see that all key recommendations of the review will be implemented. This includes changes the AIP advocated for, such as the removal of a ministerial veto over research grants. It is welcome news for the Australian research community.

September is a busy month for the AIP Women in Physics Tour, as Dr Karen Livesey delivers public lectures and school talks across ACT, NSW, SA and Tas. See the dates below and join Karen to hear how nano-magnets are solving problems in medicine, technology and more.

The AIP NSW branch has a number of awards on offer, particularly for early-career researchers and graduates. If you are in NSW, I encourage you to apply, or to nominate a colleague or student.

Finally, a reminder that the AIP Summer Meeting will be held in Canberra in the first week of December. Don’t forget to send in your abstracts! The submission deadline is 25 September.

ARC review: all recommendations to be implemented

The Government’s response to the final report of the ARC review was released on 20 August 2023.

“The report is very welcome news,” said AIP President Nicole Bell. “The Government intends to implement all the key recommendations of the ARC review, including changes that the Australian Institute of Physics advocated for.”

Nano-magnets Women in Physics tour

Adelaide, Canberra, Wollongong, Sydney and Tasmania are the next stops on the Women in Physics (WIP) Lecture tour with Dr Karen Livesey.

Confirmed dates are on the WIP webpage.

Tasmanian events will be announced soon, including school visits and a public lecture at the University of Tasmania on Friday 22 September.

                “I opted to do Physics, despite being told I was mad. It was a time when physicists were begging in the streets as there was a downturn in demand for physicists, due to weapons treaties between the US and the USSR,” says AIP Lifetime Fellow, Ross McPhedran.

                Ross’ career then joined the ‘renaissance’ of optics “partly due to the invention of the laser and its emerging applications like holography and metrology,” he says.
