This week saw the introduction of legislation to abolish the Ministerial veto over Australian Research Council funding and establish an ARC Board to approve grants. This welcome development, which the AIP has strongly advocated for, will help restore the trust of the research community in the ARC grant assessment process.
I am pleased to announce the AIP has formed a partnership with the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI), which will facilitate the physics and mathematics communities to cooperate in areas of mutual interest, such as outreach and advocacy.
The AIP Summer Meeting is fast approaching! To be held in Canberra next week, 3 – 8 December, it’s shaping up to be the biggest event for physics in Australia in 2023! Find the program here. In addition to a great line up of physics talks and networking opportunities, the Summer Meeting will include a panel discussion of the new (draft) National Science and Research Priorities at the Shine Dome on the Tuesday evening. I am delighted to welcome two new members to the AIP Executive – Prof Martin White (University of Adelaide) and Dr Mohammad Usman (CSIRO) – and look forward to working with them to further the aims of the AIP and physics in Australia. Finally, I have the pleasure of congratulating the winners of the 2023 AIP ACT Photography Competition, for their creative photos capturing beautiful physics phenomena. ASTRO 3D achieved gender parity in astronomy in just five years
A paper published in Nature Astronomy reports how ASTRO 3D achieved equal numbers of women and men using science.
“We used research in sociology and psychology to develop evidence-based strategies, and to create a supportive and positive culture in our Centre,” says Professor Lisa Kewley, the founding director of ASTRO 3D, the Australian Research Council Centre for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions, and the lead author on the paper.
“Our success offers a model to other organisations, especially in the physical sciences where participation rates for women continue to be well behind the biological sciences, and where gender equality has remained stubbornly low,” says Professor Emma Ryan-Weber, the current Director of ASTRO 3D. News and opportunities
The AIP has formed a partnership
with the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI). The AIP will
be recognised as society member of AMSI, while AMSI will be recognised as an
AIP partner organisation. This will facilitate the mathematics and physics
communities to cooperate in areas of mutual interest, such as submissions to
government reviews relating to STEM teaching and research, and the STEM

Applications for the CSIRO Alumni Scholarship in Physics
close on 1 December, offering postgraduate scholarships of $6,000, which can be
used to fund travel costs to visit and/or conduct research overseas or
interstate. Read

The Commission on Particles and Fields (C11) of IUPAP
invites nominations of outstanding young experimental or theoretical particle
physicists for the two 2024 Early Carer Scientist Prizes. Applications are due
1 February. Read more.
Australian Physics magazine is calling for
technical article submissions. All members of the physics community are
encouraged to contribute, especially early-career physicists. Note, as Australian
Physics magazine is not a peer-reviewed research publication, it cannot
publish articles containing the results of original research that has not
already been published in the peer-reviewed literature. If you would like to
write an article for Australian Physics, please contact the editors at editors@aip.org.au.
The AIP NSW Branch held their 2023 Postgraduate Awards Night
in November. Congratulations to Renee Goreham (Community Outreach to Physics), Jacob
Johnstone (Postgraduate Presentation) and Jaime Andreas Alvardo-Monte (Royal

Vale Emeritus
Professor William “Bill” Rachinger (FAIP): The AIP recently learned of the death of one of
our early members, Bill Rachinger. Bill joined the AIP in 1966. One of his
prominent scientific contributions was the Rachinger Correction, for the
measurement of widths of X-ray diffraction lines. Bill was also a strong
advocate for physics education in high schools and universities, and helped
establish Experilearn – the precursor to Melbourne’s Scienceworks. Read

microwaves to phones and cleaner coal
“After World War II, University of Sydney’s facilities were stretched, accommodating
many returned service people along with the school leavers”, says Paul Roubel Cornwell Goard.
“I joined CSIRO’s Coal Research Section
in 1953, researching optical, thermal and electrical properties of coals, chars
and boiler deposits; instrument development; and improvements to electrostatic precipitators,
which clean the flue gases of coal-fired power stations boilers.”
