Dear {Contact_First_Name},
Congratulations to Prof Michael Tobar, who has been awarded the Harrie
Massey Medal for his work on precision measurement. More below.
AIP plans for the 2025 International Year
of Quantum Science and Technology are gearing up and we now need your help!
Volunteer opportunities are available to help with outreach activities,
industry events, communications and more. Read below to find out how to get
involved.
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Geoff Shute last month. Geoff
was one of the original AIP members at our inauguration in 1963. He
continued teaching in the undergraduate labs at U. Melbourne for many years
beyond retirement, leaving a positive and lasting impression on countless
students, me included!
For those in Brisbane and Sydney, you can
catch the final 2024 Women in Physics lectures from Prof Sue Coppersmith later
this month. More below.
The AIP Congress is fast approaching!
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first AIP Congress in
1974, and Congress Chair Kaye Morgan and her team have been hard at work
putting together a great line up of Congress activities. Don't forget to
register!
Best wishes, Nicole Bell

Massey medal winner: Michael Tobar
Congratulations to Professor Michael Edmund Tobar, The
University of Western Australia, who was awarded the Harrie Massey Medal and
Prize.
Michael created and undertook numerous new precision
measurement techniques and experiments in the field of time and frequency, and
low temperature quantum physics, with the goal of solving some of the biggest
questions in fundamental physics. These led to several translational outcomes.
The award is a gift of the Institute of Physics (UK) to the
AIP. It will be presented at AIP Congress in December by IOP President Elect
Michele Dougherty.
More about the 2024 winner and the award here.

The International Conference on Quark Confinement and Hadron Structure was hosted in Cairns this August. 300 participants discussed latest developments, from the properties of neutron stars (which contain the most dense matter in the Universe) to Dark Matter’s nature and attempts to detect it. With Dr Ayse Kizilersu from Adelaide as Chair, the meeting was regarded by all as a tremendous success.

Sadly, two former AIP members passed away in recent weeks. Vale Dr Geoffrey Shute, an original AIP member from our 1963 inauguration and long-term staff member of the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne, and Philip Spark, who at various times taught physics at UNSW, La Trobe University Bendigo, and UNE.
