I write this
introduction coming from a “Superstars of STEM” event organised by Science and
Technology Australia (STA) and hosted by Google.
In the photo from
the event are Dr Vanessa Pirotta (a Superstar of STEM), Sally Loane
(Chubb Insurance), and Misha Schubert (Chief Executive Officer, STA) (Photo credit: Katje Ford).
It was
fantastic to hear how the Superstars of STEM program enables many women to gain
the visibility and network to excel in science and technology with many
examples of research impact. It was also great to see how Google celebrates
diversity, including for the pure and simple motivation of better outcomes for
the company. On a more general note, Google is very much looking for people
with a science background combined with coding and teamwork skills.
Congratulations
to our VP Nicole Bell for her appointment as Council member of the Association of Asia Pacific
Physical Societies.
Along similar
lines regarding physical societies, I would like to announce the nominations by
the AIP Executive for 2023 National Executive roles: Dongchen Qi (University of
Queensland) for National Honorary Treasurer and Stuart Midgley (AIP WA) for Vice
President. See the Executive’s nominations here. All positions will take office at our
Annual General Meeting in February next year.
Finally, it is
time to make travel arrangements for the Adelaide
Congress since the early bird registration deadline
is only a good 4 weeks away (30 Sep). I’m looking forward to catching up
with you.
