The Opportunity

Join the Department of Imaging and Radiation Sciences as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer and play a key role in teaching and research in Imaging Physics and Artificial Intelligence within medical imaging.

This position provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with academics and researchers in the Department, enhancing its research capacity and contributing to cutting-edge advancements. You will also play a key role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs, focusing on medical imaging physics, with an emphasis on specialties such as Ultrasound and CT, as well as the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning in biomedical applications.

In this role, you will also lead innovative research in medical imaging and radiation sciences, driving advancements in biomedical imaging technologies. Your expertise will guide the future direction of research in these areas, with a particular focus on leveraging big data and artificial intelligence to address complex challenges in medical imaging. You will also supervise PhD, honours and postgraduate students, fostering their growth and supporting them in conducting ground-breaking research. Additionally, you will contribute to educational innovation by shaping curriculum design and ensuring that the program stays at the forefront of industry and academic developments.

We are seeking candidates for this position who have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, coupled with a demonstrated record of teaching medical imaging, imaging physics or artificial intelligence. This position demands a strong ability to engage with students, staff and external stakeholders alike. There is also there is an expectation that you will also have a successful track record of research funding and high-quality peer-reviewed publications.

The Role

The Radiation Safety Advisor is a specialised safety role as part of the WHS Strategy and Assurance team and larger Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) WHS Enabling Capability team. The Radiation Safety Advisor works with Science & Technology staff to foster a positive and collaborative environment and to ensure radiation safety. The Radiation Safety Advisor will provide key support on radiation safety and compliance matters impacting the Fishermans Bend site. This is an exciting radiation safety role for someone looking to become a radiation safety specialist.

About our Team

WHS Strategy and Assurance provides specialised safety services to support operational capability in DSTG.  As part of the larger DSTG Research Safety Enabling Capability team, WHS Strategy and Assurance supports safety in Hazardous Chemicals and Radiation, as well as supporting safety systems and incident investigations.

This role is part of the broader Research Safety Team, which is passionate about safety and committed to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture where all our people can achieve their potential. Our team works collaboratively with scientist from different disciplines to understand, shape, improve and grow safety management across DSTG. About Flinders Microscopy and Microanalysis (FMMA)

Flinders Microscopy and Microanalysis (FMMA) is home to cutting edge technology and advanced microscopy, microanalysis, spectroscopy and imaging equipment. These instruments are funded by government grants, Microscopy Australia and the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF). Led by a multi-disciplinary team of expert chemists, biologist, physicists and engineers, these instruments are one-of-a-kind in Australia and often utilised by scientists in Australia and around the world.

About the Role

Flinders University is seeking a diligent Electron and Ion Scattering Spectroscopy Facility Manager, to be responsible for the Metastable Induced Electron Spectroscopy (MIES) and Neutral Impact Collision Ion Scattering Spectroscopy (NICISS) instruments at Flinders Microscopy and Microanalysis (FMMA).

Working closely with the FMMA Director and Facility Leaders, you will ensure the success of research services and programs, the day-to-day running of the facility, analyse samples for academic and industrial research and provide training and technical advice to users.

The Facility Manager, will also be accountable for:

  • Providing day-to-day management of the Electron and Ion Scattering Spectroscopy platforms in FMMA, including microscopy, spectroscopy, sample preparation, instrument operation, maintenance and repair.

  • Contributing to the development and review of ongoing business plans to secure the long-term development of the facility; including assisting in the preparation of funding applications related to the platform.

  • Foster interactions with the commercial sector with the aim of developing mutually productive commercial/scientific outcomes and undertaking contract work.

About You

You will have high level management experience, with the ability to contribute towards the strategic planning and operational protocols of the facility as well as manage physical and financial resources in accordance with University policies and procedures.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate:

  • A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or equivalent experience.

  • Proven knowledge and proficiency in either Electron or Ion Scattering Spectroscopy.

  • Ability to train new users in the high-level use of state-of-the-art microscopy techniques.

  • Experience with ultra-high vacuum instrument operation and maintenance.

  • Evidence of high-level verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to provide microanalytical advice to a diverse clientele including: internal staff and students; external clients; and industry representatives.

The Role

The Radiation Safety Advisor is a specialised safety role as part of the WHS Strategy and Assurance team and larger Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) WHS Enabling Capability team. The Radiation Safety Advisor works with Science & Technology staff to foster a positive and collaborative environment and to ensure radiation safety. The Radiation Safety Advisor will provide key support on radiation safety and compliance matters impacting the Fishermans Bend site. WHS Strategy and Assurance provides specialised safety services to support operational capability in DSTG.  As part of the larger DSTG Research Safety Enabling Capability team, WHS Strategy and Assurance supports safety in Hazardous Chemicals and Radiation, as well as supporting safety systems and incident investigations.

Postdoctoral Fellow Position

STM based optical access to a single spin


Project

The UNSW and the Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology seek enthusiastic

candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellow (level B, $112K - $132K plus 17% Superannuation) position in the field

rare-earth ions based on electron-spin resonance and scanning-tunnelling spectroscopy. Rare-earth ions,

such as Erbium (Er), are now considered as promising candidates for quantum computation and

communication applications due to their extraordinary long spin and optical coherence times at cryogenic

temperatures [1]. The Postdoctoral Fellow will undertake the development of optical access to a single rareearth

spin in a scanning tunnelling microscope. The goal of this project is to achieve control over rare-earth

ion’s position in crystal hosts such as Si as well as rare-earth ion’s site, that is, its relative location with respect

to the host crystal atoms. This project is a collaboration with the group of Prof Andreas Heinrich at IBS Centre

for Quantum Nanoscience (QNS) in Seoul that pioneered STM based electron spin resonance [2].


Your role

You will join a team that is establishing STM based ESR as a local magnetic field sensor at UNSW that will be

used to detect the spin state of a single rare-earth atom. The aim is to optically manipulate the spin state of

an atom based on resonant resonantly driving its telecom optical. You will carry out clean room

nanofabrication, scanning-tunnelling spectroscopy at low temperature in ultra-high vacuum, epitaxial growth,

and collaborate with theory groups.


Environment

You will benefit from the world-recognized expertise on single ion-based quantum devices and quantumstate

imaging [3,4]. Furthermore, you will have access to a range of unique methods developed in the centre

labs, i.e., an atomic-scale device fabrication, coherent spin control, quantum state imaging of full devices [to

appear in Nature Electronics 2023]. You will develop skills on low-temperature optical spectroscopy in

combination with scanning probe work. Strong international collaborations are maintained with groups on

experimental and theoretical sides.


Criteria

Enthusiastic PhD graduate, or equivalent, with STM experience and knowledge in semiconductors, optics,

quantum mechanics and condensed matter physics. Knowledge of equity and diversity principles.

Postdoctoral Fellow Position

Rare-earth based devices for quantum-information processing


Project

The UNSW and the Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology seek enthusiastic

candidates for a PostDoc (level A step 6, $100K - $107K plus 17% Superannuation) position in the field of

rare-earth ions based experimental photonics for quantum information processing. Rare-earth ions, such as

Erbium (Er), are now considered as promising candidates for quantum computation and communication

applications due to their extraordinary long spin and optical coherence times at cryogenic temperatures [1].

Erbium is especially interesting as, additionally to narrow spin and optical linewidths and negligible

nonradiative losses, Er ions emit photons at the telecommunication wavelength. Integrating single Er ions

with Si-based photonic nanocavities can potentially allow realizing single photon sources that can be used

for cluster state generation, a primary source for measurement-based quantum computing [2, 3].


Your role

You will work on integrating Er ions with photonic nanostructures. A near future result of this effort will be

an array of sources of pure indistinguishable photons operating at the telecommunication wavelength. Erbased

single photon sources will be used for quantum optics experiments relevant to optical quantum

computing, i.e., cluster state generation [4, 5] and optical boson sampling [6]. The candidate will carry out

clean room nanofabrication, spectroscopy, theory, and numerical modelling.


Environment

You will benefit from the world-recognized expertise on single ion-based quantum devices and quantum

electronics. The candidate will have access to a range of unique methods developed at Rogge’s lab, i.e., a

highly sensitive spectroscopy technique based on a sample on single photon detector approach. You will

develop strong skills on low-temperature optical spectroscopy, device engineering and nanofabrication.

Strong international collaborations (USA, Europe) are maintained with groups on experimental and

theoretical sides.

Background on ASNO
ASNO’s primary goal is to enhance Australian and international security through activities that strengthen the effectiveness of regimes against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. ASNO is responsible for ensuring that Australia’s international obligations are met under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Australia's NPT safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Amended Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, Australia's suite of bilateral nuclear cooperation agreements, ensuring that Australia meets its international obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention while also co-ordinating work related to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), including facilitating the operation of 21 Treaty monitoring facilities in Australia. These functions are implemented by a broad range of technical and thematic experts spread across five thematic work areas – Bilateral Safeguards, IAEA Safeguards, Nuclear Security, Disarmament and CTBT, and Chemical Weapons Convention Implementation. Staff within ASNO work closely with the IAEA and international and regional partners to support global non-proliferation efforts. Additionally, staff perform domestic regulatory functions to ensure that nuclear and chemical materials are safeguarded in accordance with international best practice and Australia’s international obligations.

About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a new research initiative, in the area of photonics with applications in neurophotonics, between the Nanophotonics and Plasmonics Advancement Lab (NPAL), part of the Institute of Photonics and Optical Science (IPOS) in School of Physics, at the University of Sydney and the Australian National University. The successful candidate will conduct research using conventional photonic modelling, fabrication and optical testing techniques to develop on-chip neurophotonic devices. These will be capable to induce neural activity in individual neurons via the emitted light from the chip as well as collecting photons emitted by individual neurons when a neural activity is present. The research will be carried out with researchers at the two institutions.

This research is part of the NHMRC-funded Ideas Grant “Universal Neurophotonic Interface: A Revolution In Medical Bionics” in addition to the funded support from the School of Physics and the Physics Foundation, thanks to the Physics Grand Challenges winning proposal “Universal Neurophotonic Interface: Bionics with “Feeling”. The overarching project is highly cross-disciplinary and requires the candidates to interact with scientists with expertise in photonics, stem cell biology, gene editing, bioengineering, nerve conduits, neuromodulation and neuroscience in general. You will supervise and/or co-supervise undergraduate and/or postgraduate students working on related projects. From time-to-time you will also be asked to contribute to the general activities of the Team and potentially to other projects aligned with the scientific goals and interests of the participating research groups. The role requires regular reporting in writing and in person to the Team Leaders.

About you

  • the use of Near Field Scanning Optical Microscopes
  • experimental Nanophotonics and more specifically Plasmonics.

Grant-Funded Researcher (A/B) - Institute for Photonics & Advanced Sensing (IPAS) at the University of Adelaide

This is a unique opportunity to join one of Australia’s most well-funded applied physics research groups with outstanding connections to end-users. If you have a passion to see your efforts translated into real-world devices then this is the position for you.

The successful applicant will work as part of a combined university-defence research team that is delivering a quantum magnetometer array for maritime deployment. This project has been on-going for 10 years and is now reaching an exciting stage of development. You will be at the centre of a trans-disciplinary team that will aim to both understand the fundamental limits of the magnetometer performance in a lab-based setting, with a goal to maximise sensitivity, and then to deploy this world-leading technology in the field through a number of planned trials. In addition, the appointee will also be given explicit time and support to pursue their own research interests as part of the role.

The position will be appointed into one of Australia’s best funded research groups that is working at the leading edge of precision experimental physics.  You will work closely with a team of 5 people, in partnership with Defence, collectively developing a device that will have a high impact and public profile.  The project will be undertaken in the positive, supportive and ambitious environment that exists within the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) at the University of Adelaide.

IPAS has an annual research budget of more than $15M p.a., a membership of more than 250 people, and is headquartered in a $100M bespoke research building on the CBD campus of the University of Adelaide. IPAS has available a superb range of optical diagnostic and manufacturing equipment, precision manufacturing (3D metal and plastics printing), glass and optical fibre manufacture and MBE semiconductor manufacturing.   Equally importantly, IPAS provides strategic grants support, business development support and facility management through a high-performing and professional team. IPAS works to create new sensors that can measure the immeasurable, stimulate the creation of new industries, and improve productivity in existing industry. 

To be successful you will need:

  • PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in experimental physics.
  • Hands on experience in experimental physics in the AMO field i.e. the measurement and manipulation of atoms using light e.g. theoretical and experimental understanding of light-atom interactions, an understanding of ensemble dynamics in warm atomic vapours, precision  atomic spectroscopy.
  • Advanced analytical and computational skills, including data collection and analysis, and a demonstrated ability to perform numerical and symbolic calculations.
  • Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals.
  • Experience in atomic magnetometry desirable.

Please note, although not a prerequisite, eligibility for an Australian Department of Defence Baseline Security Clearance is desirable.

Physics Teaching Laboratory Coordinator

About This Opportunity

The Physics Teaching Laboratory Coordinator provides relevant subject matter expertise and specialist technical and coordination support to assist with the development and delivery of a high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate coursework teaching laboratory program.

Key responsibilities include:

Education

  • In conjunction with discipline-based academic staff, develop and maintain undergraduate and postgraduate coursework laboratory experiments to satisfy learning objectives for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework courses, including: determining requirements for the preparation/conduct of classes, the development and testing of new practicals and participation in tutor training.
  • Assist with preparations for and participate in the outreach activities, information sessions and workshops for schools and other external organisations.
  • Assist with distribution, handling and administration of teaching related materials such as practical notes.

Technical/Scientific

  • Provide technical laboratory support and proactively advise academic staff, tutors and researchers around relevant and appropriate laboratory methods, equipment, quality assurance procedures, risk assessment and waste management.
  • Assist with the training and supervision of students and tutors conducting laboratory activities.
  • Prepare, set up, clear away and/or dispose of chemicals, equipment, instruments and demonstrations.
  • Troubleshoot issues with experiments and equipment.
  • Guide and support students, academic staff, course coordinators, and other technical staff in testing and development projects, test work, set up and technical/equipment training.
  • Ensure a high standard of laboratory housekeeping, waste disposal, sample storage and management and chemical inventory management is implemented.

  • Assist in the development of testing procedures and methodologies, including analysis of the quality, acceptance of existing procedures, and safety testing.
  • Maintain, service, repair and calibrate laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with preparation for external site work/experiments.
  • Perform laboratory experiments and generate reports.

Safety

  • Ensure a high standard of occupational health and safety, risks analysis/mitigation and standards and systems, including inductions, supervision, equipment training registers, administration of Laboratory/Facility Inventories, reporting and investigating injuries, incidents and hazards.
  • Monitor compliance with University laboratory requirements, including supporting laboratory audit processes and quarantine procedures, such as internal and external laboratory compliance checks.
  • Ensure safe design principles are applied to the activities of the Laboratory/Facility plant designed and manufactured in (or for) the laboratories.
  • Undertake the roles of Laser Safety Officer and Environmental Management Systems Officer for the Physics teaching laboratories.

Operational and Administration

  • Coordinate laboratory equipment requests, maintain consumables and other items required to meet planned activities and undertake inventory functions, ensuring that periodic audit items and maintenance schedules are met.
  • Contribute to development of laboratory budget planning with regard to laboratory consumables, equipment, facilities maintenance and service contracts, as well as undertake procurement activities as required.
  • Assist with supervision of casual laboratory support staff.
  • Liaise with internal and external clients.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Physics Teaching Laboratory Coordinator to provide relevant subject matter expertise and specialist technical and coordination support to assist with the development and delivery of a high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate coursework teaching laboratory program.

  • Completion of a relevant degree in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering with subsequent experience in coordinating facilities or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Progress towards the completion of honours level qualifications or higher, is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in high quality tutoring and/or teaching at a university level.
  • Demonstrated laboratory knowledge and skills encompassing a range of physics laboratory equipment (e.g., lasers) and competency in basic electronics.
  • Knowledge of relevant courses and programs of study plus an understanding of the range of activities performed in the Physics Laboratories, or the capability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Relevant experience in a laboratory role, preferably in a teaching laboratory environment at a university or similar educational setting.
  • Detailed knowledge of legislative requirements and operating procedures for major areas of laboratory safety such as lasers, waste disposal, labelling and risk assessment, or the capability to quickly acquire this knowledge and apply in the workplace.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time (100% FTE) continuing position at a Professional HEW Level 6. The full-time equivalent HEW 6 base salary will be in the range of $84,871 - $91,158 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range of $99,300 - $106,655 per annum.

The Role

As a team member you will contribute to the science team that provides support, training, advice and R&D for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

The team provides training in radiation detection and safety to specialised units within the ADF and also provides testing of equipment in support of Defence acquisition programs. The science team operates an accredited radiological laboratory which includes a range of radiological sources.

R&D activities are focussed on high-end radiation source search, including stand-off imaging detection and the use of unmanned platforms. A significant effort is underway to develop a sophisticated radiation simulation capability that will allow accurate modelling of radiation transport and detection in complex environments.

Under limited direction and guidance, you will be responsible for:

  • Contributing to the operation of the DSTG Radiological laboratory.
  • Contributing to training and advice on radiological detection and safety.
  • Contributing to the radiological T&E program in support of ADF acquisition programs.

Contributing to the long-term R&D program in one or more of the following areas:

  • Development of sophisticated radiological synthetic environments using the Geant4 simulation framework.
  • Development of new radiation detection systems and concepts of use.

About our Team

The Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Defence branch of Sensors & Effectors Division is responsible for developing, sustaining and applying scientific and technical skills and domain knowledge relevant to defence against CBRN threats.

The Modelling Analysis and Physical Sciences sub-branch leads the application of hazard assessment and modelling of CBRN threats. This capability is built around a core skillset of physical, mathematical and computer sciences. Areas of expertise include dispersion modelling, aerosol science, epidemic modelling and radiation detection. This capability provides analysis, advice and training as well as support to operations and acquisition programs in relation to CBRN hazard assessment and radiological defence.

The capability has a significant number of partnerships, including with international and domestic scientific agencies, Special Operations Command and National Security Agencies.

The Climate Research Scientist will lead research on climate hazards such as storms, heatwaves, bushfires, and drought, and utilise the research to better prepare for the impacts of climate hazards.  The position will conduct process-based evaluations of key climate hazards in observations and climate models.  They will perform verification and assessment of hazard indices in climate forecast products, which in turn will guide how hazard products are provided to clients.  The role requires an understanding of atmospheric dynamics with good analytical, statistical, and programming skills to develop and apply fit-for-purpose weather and climate hazard indices. 

In this role, you will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, play a lead role in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts. You will provide critical assessment of key climate risks for Australia.   •      Developing and running workflows for the provision of fit-for-purpose climate hazard information for climate risk assessments
  •        Developing new hazard products for emerging weather and climate risk applications
  •        Assisting in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carry out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity and innovation.
  •      Drawing on professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience to recognise opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives by pursuing new ideas/approaches and networking with scientific colleagues across a range of disciplines.

Location: Hobart, Tasmania preferred

Salary: AU$105k – AU$114k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

1.     A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as meteorology, climatology, mathematics, statistics, or physics.

2.     Understanding of the drivers of climate variability and extremes, and weather and climate principles.

3.     Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.

4.     Ability and desire to work in a collaborative and team environment to advance the research

5.     A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.

6.     Programming skills and experience, preferably in python, R, or matlab.

7.     Solid writing and communication skills with the ability to present their research to diverse audiences.
