Public Lecture (TAS) - Professor Mahananda Dasgupta - A journey through nuclear reactions

  • 7 May 2026
  • 6:00 PM - 7:15 PM
  • University of Tasmania, Physics Lecture Theatre 1, Physics Building, Dobson Road, Sandy Bay Campus

The TAS branch of the AIP cordially invites you to a public lecture by Professor Mahananda Dasgupta, Australian National University.

Nuclear reactions, the only way by which one element and its isotopes can be changed into another, lie at the heart of the most powerful processes in nature. From fuelling the Sun to applications that shape modern society, their impact is far more ubiquitous than what one may imagine.

This talk presents an intuitive journey through nuclear reactions, beginning with core principles and progressing to latest research and practical applications. We focus on advances enabled by the highest voltage particle accelerator in Australia, one of only three such facilities worldwide. Topics will include the quest to create the heaviest elements in the periodic table, through to understanding Australian groundwater, to testing technologies bound for space.
